MAD SONG/WINDY DAY

One afternoon I was sitting in the hills outside Santa
Fe with three or four dogs. It was very hot, very
still, and the dogs were sacked out.

At one moment, and almost as one, the dogs sat up,
perked their ears, and started moving their heads
around. A few seconds later I heard a sound like surf
moving in the distance; and then, after a few more
seconds watched the pinon and juniper catch a breeze
as a wind swept over and past us. The dogs barked
after the wind and chased its tail but couldn't catch
it; and then, once again, it was very hot, very still.

The dogs settled down, but I was hyper-alert, and felt
like a multitude of spirits had just stampeded past.
